Abitibi-Témiscamingue is…
Pristine blue skies and fairy aurora borealis confer an almost magical atmosphere to our region. Abitibi-Témiscamingue ignites and sustains the imaginary, because it is sheltered in the immense Boreal and Laurentian forests to which amazing legends and customs are associated.
Its landscape attests to the passage of glaciers with its particular geological formations such as eskers and moraines, the water divide, from where the current flows southerly or northerly depending on the land it caresses. Abitibi-Témiscamingue is the finest area to get acquainted with Quebec’s geological and glacial history.
Among the vestiges discovered so far, many are related to human presence 9,000 years ago, that is, 1,000 years only after the last 3 km thick glacier had melted. However we must go back 1,500 years to refer to actual occupation of land by the Amerindians. Today the First Nations still inhabit part of their ancestral lands, a wealth well rooted in the memory and history of our region.
Known for its wide-open spaces, its forests abounding in game and its fish-rich waters, Abitibi-Témiscamingue’s 65,143 km2 of land is the home of 150,000 inhabitants. Abitibi-Témiscamingue offers you the opportunity to discover something different.
Abitibi-Témiscamingue … with open arms!
