La Cité de l'Or
Discover the two historic sites that make up La Cité de l’Or, in Val-d’Or, Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The Ancienne-Mine-Lamaque is an interpretation center. Become a miner for a day, and enjoy the unique experience of descending 91 meters (300 feet) into an underground mine. Also, visit the ground facilities of this former mine, which include an analysis laboratory where you will be introduced to ore processing. Learn about the mine’s history through the exhibition “ Gold in our veins ” and about the various mining trades, and feel the uncommon sensation that occurs during drilling operations. As a group or with your family, take part in a geocaching activity with a GPS receiver in hand. Visitors to the underground mine must be at least 6 years old and 1.09 m tall; warm clothing recommended and closed shoes required (underground temperature: 8 °C).
